Match Report
Bede's School Boys-U18B vs  Cranleigh School
On: Saturday, 23 Apr 2022
Venue: Away

The 2nd XI acquitted themselves admirably in their first game of the season against a strong side, especially given several last minute changes meaning they were missing some key players. Cranleigh won the toss and batted first in very windy conditions which made both batting and bowling difficult. The wicket was good to bat on, but initially offered some early assistance for the seamers with the new ball. Will Broyd produced the best spell of the match up the hill and into a strong wind taking a wicket and going for only 11 runs from his 6 overs. For the first 15 overs the conditions meant neither side got on top and a smart catch from Jenson Eve at cover was one of several wickets including 2 for Ollie Loach. However, as the innings progressed the wicket flattened out and the fast outfield meant batting became far easier. A partnership of 87 for the fourth wicket meant that the game was in danger of running away from Bede’s but they stuck to their task in the final 4 overs to keep the score under 200. Cranleigh finished on 191 for 7 which was still a very challenging total.

In response Bede lost a wicket in the first over but Sam French (40) and Callum Hall (56) both dug in and a partnership of 71 provided hope, before French was caught at deep square leg. Cranleigh’s spinners and some tidy fielding caused the rate to climb, meaning Bede’s lost further wickets. Hall continued to bat patiently and held the innings together until he was out in the 28th over. Eventually Bede closed on a respectable 155 for 8.
